The term “flying saucer”refers to strange objects travelling through the earths atmosphere at very high speeds.Thousands of people all over the world claim to have seen them. Some believe them to be spaceships from other planets.Others insist that they are a secret type of aircraft being built on earth. Many people maintain that they are only natural phenomena happening under special temperature, light,or weather conditions All reports, however, agree that the strange objects move at extremely high speeds and fail to follow the laws of motion by reversing(逆转) direction instantly without slowing down. In the United States, the first flying saucers were reported on June 4,1947,by a private plane pilot. He saw nine objects travelling in the sky. Each was diskshaped and very bright.Because their movements were compared to those of a “saucer skimming across the water”, newspaper reporters called them “flying saucers”. Some weeks after the first reported sighting, the United States Air Force was given the job of investigating all the reports of flying saucers.Because of the confusing variety of shapes, sizes, and colors reported, the Air Force adopted the term Unidentified Flying Objects(UFO) to describe them. Since the Air Force officials began their investigation of flying saucers, they have identified most of the objects as stars, planes, manmade satellites, experimental missiles(导弹),or weather phenomena. Some of the UFO reports, including photographs, were deliberate(蓄意的)tricks made to cheat people. All the research so far has failed to prove that UFOs are spaceships coming from outside the earth. Most investigators agree, however, that more study is needed before the question of whether or not flying saucers really exist can be answered.21The term“flying saucer” is generally used to refer to.Aspaceships from other planetsBa secret type of aircraft being builtCsome natural phenomenaDstrange objects flying very fast in the sky【】22The first flying saucers got their name.Afrom a private plane pilot who saw themBfor their brightness in colorCbecause they looked like disks moving in the airDbecause they skimmed across the water【】23The Air Force preferred the term UFO because.Anewspaper reporters used itBthe term “flying saucer” was very confusingCUFO is a general term that can refer to a larger variety of objectsDthe Air Force didnt find any objects that looked like flying saucers【】24All the research has failed to identify any UFOs as.Amanmade satellitesBaircraftCexperimental missilesDspaceships sent from other planets【】25From this passage we know that.Athe US Air Force was the first reporter of flying saucersBthe term UFO was first used by the US Air Force investigatorsCUFOs are not worth further investigationDthe question of whether there exist flying saucers has already been answered 【】Passage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The American educator Horace Mann once said:“As an apple is not in any proper sense an apple until it is ripe,so a human being is not in any proper sense a human being until he is educated.”Education is the process through which man attempts to pass on to his children his hardwon wisdom and his ideals of a better world. This process begins shortly after birth,as parents seek to train the infant to behave as his culture demands.Schooling,or formal education, consists of experiences that are carefully planned to help young people learn what adults consider important for them to know and how they should respond to choices. While almost everyone accepts the goal of developing skills in the three Rs—reading, writing and arithmetic—it often seems impossible to reach agreement on any goal beyond that.In the broadest terms, the conflict over educational goals can be viewed as a conflict between two groups of people—conservatives and liberals(自由派). The conservatives tend to identify a desirable education with the transmission of the cultural knowledge, offering courses featuring the three Rs at the elementary level and academic(普通文化课的)studies or strong vocational(职业的)or business courses in the secondary school. They stress training of the mind and development of abilities. The liberals tend to be interested in the development of the “whole child,”not merely in training his mind or in preparing him for adult life in a remote future. They emphasize rich, meaningful school living in the present, and they view subject matter as a resource for total human development rather than as a goal in itself. They believe that content should be acquired not for its own sake but as a means of encouraging thought and inquiry.26What Horace Mann means is that.Aeducation is essential for mans growthBan apple is delicious only when it is ripeCa man is like a child without proper educationDeducation can be compared to the growth of an apple tree【】27At school, children.Afind it hard to win wisdomBhave choices in what they learnCare taught what adults select for them to learnDlearn how they should respond to teachers questions【】28The three Rs does not include.AarithmeticBwritingCreadingDreasoning【】29Its most unlikely that the conservatives should emphasize.Athe teaching of basic cultural knowledgeBcourses in three Rs in the elementary schoolCcourses such as modern physics and marketing at the secondary levelDthe development of the student as an individual person【】30The liberals hold that.Athe goal of school education is mainly to prepare students for adult lifeBteaching activities should be rich and meaningful to the studentsCcourse content should be learned and remembered for future useDbook knowledge is the only resource for learning【】Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. It has been a widespread belief that the American family is dying. But a new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study affords surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life. The American family is changing, not dying:It is becoming smaller, men and women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is higher. But despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages.Depending on the specific situation, theres often good reason for teenage marriages to break up. There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home.So far the amount of educational or development time hasnt varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television. School is the second most timeconsuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school.A larger proportion of children go to school now than ever before, and they stay in school longer.Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers(日托站) has almost doubled in recent years.Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small.31The main idea of this article is that.Athe American family is dyingByoung people today dont want to get marriedCthe American family is changing, but it is stronger than everDeducation has resulted in dramatic changes in the American family【】32Which of the following statements is NOT true?AMarriage is more popular than before.BMany divorced people remarry.CThe majority of marriages last long.DWorking mothers devote less time to their children.【】33The author of this article believes that.Athe American family is here to stayBchildren should not watch so much televisionCmothers should not work when their children are smallDteenage marriages should be encouraged【】34What is the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century?AThe daycare center.BTelevision.CThe schoolDDevelopment time.【】35According to the writer, which two major factors have led to the belief that the American family is dying?AThe divorce rate is high and working mothers neglect their children.BThe divorce rate is high and children care more about television than anything else.CDivorces are becoming increasingly more and many teenage marriages break up.DChildren stay in school longer and mothers have little time to take care of them.【】PART TWOⅣ.Word Spelling(10 points,1 point for two words)将下列汉语单词译成英语。 36表扬 v.p 37橡皮n.r 38表面n.s 39厚的a.t 40蒸汽n.s 41权力n.p 42噪声n.n 43第九num.n 44大声的a.l 45方法n.m 46羞耻n.s 47紧张n.t 48非法的a.l 49运气n.l 50中间的a.m 51严重的a.s 52财富n.w 53浅的a.s 54信号n.s 55胜利n.v Ⅴ.Word Form(10 points,1 point for each)将括号中的各词变为适当的形式填入空白。 56Many people feel that the United States(have) a very complicated tax collection system.57In 1964,the Olympic Games in Tokyo(become) the first program to be transmitted via satellite.58In the recent past, medical researchers(begin) to emphasize the fact that heart diseases are associated with stress, smoking and a lack of exercise.59Taxes consist of the money which people pay(support) their government.60For centuries the Atlantic Ocean kept the Americas from(discover) by the people of Europe.61The American consumer often feels constantly(disturb) by insurance agents.62Women tend to engage in more eye contact than men, especially when(talk) to other women.63Though marriage(practice) in almost all countries of the world, the customs are quite different from one culture to another.64No one has been able to prove that fish is any(good) for the brain than many other kinds of food.65If we did not have atmospheric pressure,we(can, not have) automobile tires.Ⅵ.Translation from Chinese into English (15 points,3 points for each)将下列各句译成英语并将答案写在答题纸上。 ⅦTranslation from English into Chinese (15 points)将下列短文译成汉语并将答案写在答题纸上。 While the quantity of food needed by the body is measured by the amount of energy,or calories,it has,the quality of food is determined by its nutrients.Nutrients are the substances in food that are needed by your body. You can consume enough soft drinks, bread, and potatoes to supply you with enough calories for the energy you need. But these foods will not supply you with all the necessary nutrients your body needs in order to function well.

If you put a buzzard in a pen six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner.

The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet.

Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

The ordinary bat that flies around at night, who is a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place.

If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

A bumblebee if dropped into an open tumbler will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out.

It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations1, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.

16. Choose the best topic sentence from the four options below. Write the corresponding letter of your choice on the Answer Sheet.

A. Some political parties have adopted animals to represent them.

B. Cars are given animal names to make consumers associate them with speed and grace.

C. Many professional sports teams, such as the Tigers and Rams, have chosen animal names to suggest power.

D. Many people in the world hold animals in such high regard that they use animals’ names for their organizations and products.

17. Read the following paragraph and write the topic sentence on the Answer Sheet.

We are on our way to becoming a cashless, checkless society, a trend that began with the credit card. Now some banks are offering “debit cards” instead of credit cards. The costs of purchases made with these cards are deducted from the holder’s bank account instead of being added to a monthly bill. And checking accounts, which are mainly used for paying bills, are going electronic. Now some people can make computer transactions over their pushbutton phones to pay bills by transferring money from their account to the account of whomever they owe. Soon we may be able to conduct most of our business without signing a check or actually seeing the money we earn and spend.

18. Read the following paragraph and choose the best topic sentence from the four options that follow. Write the corresponding letter of your choice on the Answer Sheet.

Cutting down on your responsibilities is one way to minimize stress in your life. You can also relax yourself by breathing deeply, rather than taking light, shallow breaths. Peaceful music is also soothing if you focus your attention on it and consciously disregard distracting thoughts. Another good way to release

B. My father has grown to hate stores of all kinds.

C. My mother, on the other hand, has a somewhat more complicated approach.

D. As she does so, she draws up two mental lists-one of items that she can afford and the other of items she cannot.

E. His view is that one should go into a store, buy what one came for, and leave.

F. While she believes that one should enjoy oneself as much as possible while shopping, my father feels enjoyment and shopping are two different things.

G. She prefers to look carefully over every single item in the store.

Ⅴ. (10 points, 5 points each)

20. Read the following paragraph and write the TWO irrelevant sentences on the Answer Sheet. Studies reveal that people’s first names can have influence on them. Clearly, Chinese names are quite different. Some names reflect on people in a positive way. For example, one survey showed that American men consider the name Susan to be sexy. And participants in a British study thought Tony to be the name of someone very friendly. However, other names can have a negative impact. In one study, for instance, teachers gave lower grades to essays supposedly written by boys named Hubert and Elmer than to the very same essays when they were credited to boys with more popular names. Another study found that girls with unpopular names did worse on IQ and achievement tests than girls with more appealing names. So IQ and achievement tests are important and necessary in studying names.

Ⅵ. 写信 (40 points)

21. Suppose you (Wang Lin) have finished your study, during which Professor Li helped you a lot both in your study and in your life. Write a letter to thank him. Tell him with examples that you have learned a lot from him in terms of knowledge and positive attitude towards difficulties. And

also tell him that with what you have learned from him, you have got a good job in a company or you have started your own business. (150-200 words)

I. Write an outline. (20 points)

Read the following passage carefully and compose a “sentence outline” for it.

Styles of Dress as Reflections of Social Conditions

Something that becomes very apparent when we study the topic of fashion is that clothes and style are related to so much more than merely an individual’s appearance. For thousands of years, fashion and style have been primary indicators about a person’s social status, sexuality, wealth, individuality, and overall personality attributes.

In the 20th century alone, each decade has been marked by distinctly different manners for dress for both men and women. Our Halloween tradition exemplifies this very clearly with “costumes” such as a 1920’s “flapper girl” and the 1960’s “hippie.” With deeper consideration, however, these differing fashion styles can be viewed as representative of the related social conditions occurring at the time.

As stated by Pasacoe, “The fashion of the 1920’s reflected the Jazz Age perfectly. It was made for fast automobiles and Charlestondance. For the first time in western fashion the knee was socially acceptable.” Although there are many theories regarding what causes fashion to change, the fact that social climate is reflected in styles of dress has a great deal of support. Perhaps the reason why so much change occurred in women’s dress in the early decades of the century is that so many changes occurred regarding women’s roles and fights within that same time frame.

Another decade in which fashion was strongly indicative of the underlying social conditions is the turbulent 1960’s. One of the most noted developments accredited to this decade is the introduction of the miniskirt. Many social historians relate the introduction of the miniskirt to the introduction of the birth control pill. Women became sexually liberated and the “free love” era began. These miniskirts came to symbolize the new liberation for women and the ssocial climate of the decade. As stated in Vogue at the end of the decade, “The length of your skirt is how you feel this moment.”

Towards the end of the 1960's, younger generations were rejecting the establishment and rejecting the idea of high fashion along with it. Students wore long hair, faded denim jeans, and flamboyant patterns. Many wore combat jackets and surplus shirts to anti-war rallies. As Hoeymaker stated, “By the end of the decade, cheap, flamboyant clothes became expensive designer labels. The hippie style became high fashion; in fact ‘anti-fashion’ became the biggest fashion of all.” In this case, clothes became a form of protest.

Overall, there are countless examples of how fashion is influenced by the social climate of the times. Over the past thousands of years, the socially “appropriate” styles of dress for men and women have varied tremendously. Regardless of what exactly constituted“stylish” fashion during any given time period, one thing that remains constant is that fashion has always been a significant aspect of one's life and the time in which they lived.

Say No to Blind Optimism

“Is the glass half full or half empty?" This question is often asked to determine whether someone

is an optimist or a pessimist. In my view, even though we need to see the glass half full, we cannot deny the fact that the glass is also half empty. Having a healthy proportion of expectations makes us more realistic. Blind optimism, however, may foster delusions, result in frustrations and spoil relationships.

We all long for accomplishments, but sometimes we overstress the positive outcome of our effort and waste our time with glori ous plans that will never work. We indulge ourselves in delusions and impractical dreams. We fail to see that blind optimism only gives us false promises and clouds our sense of judgment. Ambition without clear directions cannot lead to a victorious experience. We need to understand that wishful thinking and delusions won’t work.

______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Balanced optimism helps us to develop healthy relationships whereas blind optimism destroys them. One of the reasons for short-lived friendships is that we tend to expect too much of our friends. However, they may not always live up to our expectations. This gives rise to disappointment and misunderstanding. Friendships or relationships consequently turn sour. Some relationships may be seriously affected, with all parties experiencing much pain. A more realistic outlook helps us to understand human limitations, show more consideration for others and prevent excess expectations. To sum up, blind optimism does more harm than good and should be discarded. Saying no to blind optimism means we can fly but we fly with the safest bet, with the parachute, so that we don’t drop hard. It proves our ability to accept weaknesses and strive for the best. It gives us second options in our lives and alleviates the pains and disappointments that life imposes on us. This holistic attitude, accepting both positive and negative sides, will make us stronger and more mature. After all, a lotus is a beautiful flower that blossoms out of the mud.

brand again.

11. A new blouse in a fashionable color can update an old outfit; in contrast, adding dramatic jewelry or an attractive scarf can make an old outfit seem new.

12. Judging by Meg’s party, her parents are irresponsible. First of all, there is no adult supervision, for example, wine and beer are served.

14. My hometown is closer to Beijing than Shijiazhuang.

15. After correcting all the mistakes, the second draft of the paper was much better than the first. Ⅲ. (15 points, 5 points each)

Another good way to release

tension is to exercise regularly, which, rather than tiring you out, builds energy and endurance.

A. Stress has several harmful effects, so you must minimize them.

B. There are several ways you can reduce stress in your life.

C. Cutting down on responsibilities lessens stress.

D. You can relax by breathing deeply.

Ⅳ. (5 points, l point each)

19. Rearrange the following sentences so that they read logically. Write the corresponding letters in a proper sequence on the Answer Sheet. The positions of some sentences have been given.

A. After several conversations with salespeople, she then buys what she came into the store for in the first place, but all the while, my father has been reading a mystery in the car.

Make sure that the tone and vocabulary you use are in unity with the passage provided.II. Write an outline Read the following passage carefully and compose a “sentence outline” for it. Sometimes the passage is from the textbook.III. As everyone knows, No one can deny that…2. According to a recent survey, about 78.9% of the college students wanted to further their study after their graduation. Five-day Work Week Better than Six-day Work? A recent statistics shows that …
