英语(二)是自考本科段中公共课目的必须课程，也几乎是自学考试所有非英语专业的课程中最难通过的一门。课程学分为14分，是所有科目里学分最高的科目，使用的教材是全国版教材。
英语（二）满分为100分，60分即为合格，考核形式为笔试，包含题型有：阅读判断、阅读选择、概括段落大意及补全句子、填句补文、填词补文、完形补文和短文写作，共七个大题。
考试的发展状况：
2010年专业学位研究生招生考试模式确定为“分列招生计划、分类报名考试、分别确定录取标准”，初试考试科目按照与学术型研究生招生“科目对应、分值相等、内容区别”的原则设置，具体为思想政治理论、外国语、基础课、专业基础课四个单元（少数专业学位设置思想政治理论、外国语、基础课三个单元或外国语、综合能力两个单元）。
根据专业学位研究生选拔特点和培养要求，初试外国语设置“英语（二）”供19个专业学位类别中的部分专业类别使用，原统考“英语”更名为“英语（一）”，除继续供统考使用外，部分对英语水平要求较高的专业学位类别也使用“英语（一）”。
