Passage Fifteen (The Second Wave of Feminism)

The statistics I’ve cited and the living examples are all too familiar to you. But what may not be so familiar will be the increasing number of women who are looking actively for advancement of for a new job in your offices. This woman may be equipped with professional skills and perhaps valuable experience, She will not be content to be Executive Assistant to Mr. Seldom Seen of the Assistant Vice President’s Girl Friday, who is the only one who comes in on Saturday.

She is the symbol of what I call the Second Wave of Feminism. She is the modern woman who is determined to be.

Her forerunner was the radical feminist who interpreted her trapped position as a female as oppression by the master class of men. Men, she believed, had created a domestic, servile role for women in order that men could have the career and the opportunity to participate in making the great decisions of society. Thus the radical feminist held that women through history had been oppressed and dehumanized, mainly because man chose to exploit his wife and the mother of his children. Sometimes it was deliberate exploitation and sometimes it was the innocence of never looking beneath the pretensions of life.

The radical feminists found strength in banding together. Coming to recognize each other for the first time, they could explore their own identities, realize their own power, and view the male and his system as the common enemy. The first phases of feminism in the last five years often took on this militant, class-warfare tone. Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Germaine Greer, and many others hammered home their ideas with a persistence that aroused and intrigued many of the brightest and most able women in the country. Consciousness-raising groups allowed women to explore both their identities and their dreams—and the two were often found in direct conflict.

What is the stereotyped role of American women? Marriage. A son. Two daughters. Breakfast. Ironing. Lunch. Bowling, maybe a garden club of for the very daring, non-credit courses in ceramics. Perhaps an occasional cocktail party. Dinner. Football or baseball on TV. Each day the same. Never any growth in expectations—unless it is growth because the husband has succeeded. The inevitable question: “Is that all there is to life?”

The rapid growth of many feminist organizations attests to the fact that these radical feminists had touched some vital nerves. The magazine “Ms.” was born in the year of the death of the magazine “Life.” But too often the consciousness-raising sessions became ends in themselves. Too often sexism reversed itself and man-hating was encouraged. Many had been with the male chauvinist.

It is not difficult, therefore, to detect a trend toward moderation. Consciousness-raising increasingly is regarded as a means to independence and fulfillment, rather than a ceremony of fulfillment itself. Genuine independence can be realized through competence, through finding a career, through the use of education. Remember that for many decades the education of women was not supposed to be useful.

完型填空:

他从不说自己可怜,也从不表现出对那些比他幸运或健康的人的羡慕。他从别人那儿寻找的是一颗“好心”。一旦找到了,那人在他心目中就是个大好人。现在我长大了,我相信这是判断一个人的标准。虽然我还没有确切理解什么是“好心”,但我知道自己有时候并没有这么一颗“好心”。

虽说很多活动父亲都不能参加,但他还是试着以某种方式来参与。当地一个棒球队缺少一个经理时,是他使球队正常运转。他是一个见多识广的棒球迷,常常带我到埃贝茨球场,观看布鲁克林道奇队的比赛。他喜欢参加各种舞会和聚会,虽然在那儿他只能坐着观看,却也能享受一番乐趣。记得在一次沙滩聚会上,进行了一场殴斗,人人挥拳上阵,相互推撞。他不满足只是坐着观看,然而在松软的沙地上如果没人帮助,他又站不起来。于是在极度无助的情况下,他高声喊道:“谁坐下来和我对打! 谁愿意坐下来和我对打! ”没有人坐下来和他对打。第二天,人们和他开玩笑,说是第一次听到拳击手在开打之前,就有人要求他倒地服输。

如今我知道他是通过我,他唯一的儿子,间接地参与了一些事情。我打球时(球技很糟),他也“打”;后来我加入海军,他也“加入”了。我休假回家时,他一定要让我去参观他的办公室。在介绍我时,虽然没有说出口,但他实际上在说:“这是我儿子,但也是我。如果我没瘸,我也会和他一样。”

如今父亲已去世多年,但我时常想起他。不知他当时是否留意在我们同行时,我不愿意被人看到。若他确实注意到了,那我真惭愧当时没能对他说我是多么对不起他,我是多么不孝,我有多么后悔。现在,每当我因一些琐事而怨天尤人的时候,每当我嫉妒别人运气比我好的时候,每当我没有一颗“好心”的时候,我就会想起他。每逢此时,我就设想自己将手搭在他的臂上,重新找回自己的平衡,我会说:“你按你的步速走,我跟着你。”

原文如下:When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was severely crippled and very short, and when we walked together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. I would inwardly struggle at the unwanted attention. If he ever noticed or was bothered, he never let on.

It was difficult to coordinate our steps — his halting, mine impatient — and because of that, we didn't say much as we went along. But as we started out, he always said, "You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you."Our usual walk was to or from the subway on which he traveled to work. He went to work sick, and despite nasty weather. He almost never missed a day, and would make to the office even if others could not. A matter of pride.

When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. At such times my sisters or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn, N.Y., on a child's wagon with steel runners to the subway entrance. Once there, he would cling to the hand-rail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept free of ice. In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside again until we met him in Brooklyn on his way home.

When I think of it now, I am amazed at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to subject himself to such shame and stress. And at how he did it—without bitterness or complaint.He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a "good heart", and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.Now that I am older, I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don't know precisely what a "good heart" is. But I know the times I don't have one myself.

Unable to engage in many activities, my father still tried to participate in some way. When a local baseball team found itself without a manager, he kept it going. He was a knowledgeable baseball fan and often took me to Ebbets Field to see the Brooklyn Dodgers play. He liked to go to dances and parties, where he could have a good time just sitting and watching.On one occasion a fight broke out at a beach party, with everyone punching and shoving. He wasn't content to sit and watch, but he couldn't stand unaided on the soft sand. In frustration he began to shout, "I'll fight anyone who will sit down with me! I'll fight anyone who will sit down with me!"Nobody did. But the next day people kidded him by saying it was the first time any fighter was urged to take a dive before the fight began.

I now know he participated in some things through me, his only son. When I played ball (poorly), he "played" too. When I joined the Navy, he "joined" too. And when I came home on leave, he saw to it that I visited his office. Introducing me, he was really saying, "This is my son, but it is also me, and I could have done this, too, if things had been different." Those words were never said aloud.

He has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my reluctance to be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was, how unworthy I was, how I regretted it. I think of him when I complain about trifles, when I am envious of another's good fortune, when I don't have a "good heart."At such times I put my hand on his arm to regain my balance, and say, "You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you."

自考英语二第一单元课文阅读

当我们睡着的时候每个人都会做梦,但有些人从不记得自己的梦,或者很少这样做。其他人醒来时总是对自己的梦记忆犹新,尽管他们很快就会忘记它们。在一个平均8小时睡眠的夜晚,一个普通的成年人大约会做梦10到30分钟。科学家可以通过使用一种测量大脑中电波的仪器来检测某人何时有一个梦。在做梦时,这些波运动得更快。呼吸和脉搏也增加,眼睑下有快速的眼动。就像做梦的人真的在看一些移动的物体一样。这些做梦的迹象在所有被研究的哺乳动物身上都被发现,包括狗、猴子、猫和大象,还有一些鸟类和爬行动物。这段睡眠被称为“D”状态。婴儿在50%的睡眠中会经历“D”状态,到10岁时,这一时期会减少到25%左右。梦的形式。但它们可能是奇怪的,而且与事件没有联系,这没有什么意义。梦里很少没有人,通常都是关于我们认识的人。据估计,我们的梦幻剧“演员”中有三分之二是朋友和亲戚。视觉似乎是梦的一个重要组成部分,除了那些从出生就失明的人。声音和触觉也是经常被唤起的感官,但嗅觉和味觉并不经常被涉及。在“正常”的梦中,做梦者可能正在参与,或者只是一个观察者。但他或她无法控制梦中发生的事。然而,做梦者确实可以控制一种类型的梦。这种梦叫做“清醒梦”。不是每个人都是清醒的梦想家。有些人偶尔是清醒的梦想家。其他人可以或多或少地做梦。在清醒的梦中,做梦的人知道他在做梦。

英语(二)的考试试卷结构 英语(二)教学大纲是从1998年的5月份制定的,目前还没有改变,所以根据教学大纲题型,我们即将要考试的题型应该是跟4月17日考的考题类型是一样的。大家应该有了4月份的试卷,所以结构应该是一样的,我要说一下应该大家注意一下结构有70%是客观性题目,30%是主观性题目。所谓主观性题目就是自己要思考、要写的,就像汉译英、英译汉,卷还是两个卷子,1卷和2卷,1卷是选择题,2卷是非选择题。 英语(二)包括英语(一)的内容吗? 英语一的内容,从近两年的试卷来看,英语一课文中的内容很少,最多一两句,但是英语一是英语二的一个基础,所以里边的语法内容还有词汇、短语肯定要考的。所以不是英语一不考,有人说考英语二不考英语一,是不对的,英语一只能说内容考的不是原句,但是内容是包含在英语二里边的,但是重点是下册。 英语(二)备考需要背课文吗? 教材的课文一定要看,都要读一遍,读懂,里边的语法要点,不是读课文,有的同学说把课文都背下来了,但是考试还没通过,原因不是让你背课文,是把所有课文里边的知识点、语法点要弄通。 英语(二)考语法吗? 语法题是体现在题目中,不是说不考,体现在哪儿呢?比如结构题、词性变化题,以及完形题,这里边主要是考英语语法。甚至在翻译的时候要不懂语法,不会把汉语的句子变成英语,所以必须把语法弄通,因为英语是一种有规则的语言,有规则的语言不懂这个规则就不能掌握这门语言。 英语(二)阅读理解题备考技巧 这个阅读理解有一个应试技巧,简单说一说,在平常要多读,要加大速度,再有知道后边问的题目,每个阅读的段后边都有5个题目,5个题目大概要问的有几类,主要的有问作者观点,或者问这个字是什么意思,这都是直接的。最难回答的就是推理性的,如果看不懂就不会做对。所以在阅读理解的时候技巧,一个要是要阅读快,再有一个抓住要点。每段里面的第一句要注意。 英语(二)英译汉备考技巧 英译汉是一段小短文,英译汉的翻译首先要留出足够的时间,因为是最后一个题目,最后一个题目我的很多同学跟我说,其实我看都能够翻译,但是最后都没有时间了,我就简单的胡乱写了几句,这是一个失误。因为我们英译汉有15分,这个短文相对来说虽然有一定的难度,但是相对整个考卷来说这部分应该是能够拿分的题,所以大家一定要留出足够的时间。前边的题目要做,像我刚刚说的选择题,有的可以留在后边,实在没有时间了选择题可以胡乱瞎蒙,但是主观性的题目,像英译汉、汉译英,这个可以先做。 英语(二)和比英语四级考试难吗? 首先自考英语跟四六级的考试性质不太一样,我们主要是考大家的阅读能力,就是英语的阅读能力,读英语的能力。而四六级是全面的,比如说有听力我们就没有,考研也是,我们的性质不太一样。但是自考大家认为英语比较难过,主要是对于非英语专业的考生大家在比较短的时间内要使英语达到很高的水平这个难度是非常大,大家知道我们自考英语不要求听说读写各种语言能力,我们只要求了解一些阅读,根据大纲要求,重点放在阅读能力以及英汉互译能力,实际上就是考大家的这种能力,所以跟四六级的热度关系是一样的,但是性质还是不太一样。 英语二是我们专科毕业以后考自考本科毕业,四级是大学生四年大学公共英语学完了两年以后要考的,测试的方向还是跟刚才我讲的不一样。我们自考就是强调重点放在阅读和英汉互译能力,难度应该是一样的,比如说词汇量要求是一样的,还有要求的词组和词汇两个方面掌握应该是一样的,但是侧重点不一样。 英语(二)词汇记忆方法 英语二词汇要求达到3800词,词组750。有的同学问是不是就只要背下册书的词汇,回答是不够的,肯定是不够的,因为词汇没有说只考下册,上册也要背。但是有人说我短期内怎么记住这些大量的词汇呢?大家词汇学习第一个应该是有一定的时间,因为有的同学说一个星期或者两个星期教给你方法能够记住几千,他这个方法有点儿像变魔术,不太现实,我觉得词汇是一个积累。因为从心理学角度来讲学词汇有两个方向,一个方向是要把词汇学习的时候印象深刻,学词一个词能够像串葡萄似的串出一串来,比如同意词、翻译词、近义词,应该把一串词、关联的词相互记忆。第二,词汇一定得重复,从心理学角度学词必须这样。 英语(二)学习重点 英语(二)考前冲刺方法 没有学过的,像1个月以前根本就没有接触过教材,不要盲目的去参加考试,一个月时间绝对不可能一下子英语成绩突飞猛进,在最后这一个月时间只能踏下心把大学英语要考什么内容先做一个了解,现在去一个月背下3800词是不可能的 英语(二)语法复习方法 语法复习现在如果系统的看一本语法书是来不及了,要求现在考前复习语法最好是把上册书的主要部分要复习到,上册书的第8、9、10单元课后语法,把它的例句看一下。上册书的15、16、17从句的复习语法。第三部分,虚拟语气语法。这三大部分的重点做复习,这是上册书。下册书补充语法,这几部分下册书有补充语法,就是从句的主要英语、虚拟语气的补充,再有就是最难的一点非谓语动词的用法,把这三部分重点语法先复习一下,要具体看语法书就来不及了,就是把上册书的语法看一下,下册书的补充语法看一下。 英语(二)考试与教材关系大吗? 2005年4月份的考题题目,出自于课文的句子,比如说第一个题,课文的原题基本上没有,这个我跟大家讲,因为大纲要求可能是出题完全跟书上一样的,也有可能根据书上的题目改编的,所以不一定完全是书上的一模一样的句子,但是考的考点或者词、语法点都是属于跟我们的讲课重点不矛盾的。像我们2005年的试题我做一个简单的分析,像结构题,比如说主要的还是考语法的从句部分的关联词,关联词10个里边就考了4个。另外有考虚拟语气的,还有考固定搭配的就考了4个,所以这些搭配,像关联词,虽然句子不是原来书上的句子,但是是我们要重点复习的语法内容,一个是从句的关联词,再有一些固定搭配。 再有,后边的词型变化,原来说也应该是出自于书上,但是它大部分还不是书上的原句,这是4月份的考题,基本上是改编的,但是考的语法点都是我们重点要强调的主要是一些动词的变化,基本上考10个题里有4、5个都是考动词的变化,所以要分清句子,是谓语动词还是非谓语动词。 英语(二)考试如何安排考场时间 考试时间安排,总有最后的翻译题来不及做的这种情况,所以我跟大家讲主观性题目,我刚才说了有30%,一定要留出足够的时间,至少三分之一的时间来做。有一部分比较难的,就像完形填空,那个只有10分,但是有大部分同学在那儿花的时间太多了,完形填空一段文章是比较难的,把10个空填进去,如果耗费了很多时间不值得。因为完形填空一般的同学语法知识比较差的话,做不好这道题。但是像第一个题目词汇结构题,如果有一定的语法知识这道题应该是答,时间就占到总时间的,按照分数的比例来分配,不要超过10%的时间,因为我们2个半小时,大概算花多少时间。如果选择题,反正也不会就任选一个,但是主观题目一定要留出时间来做最后的30%。再有阅读理解题,也是30分,有的同学最后来不及把文章仔细看,就随便乱选了很容易选错,所以把三分之一的时间一定要留给阅读理解,还有三分之一的时间留给主观性题目就是翻译题。 再有词形变化的10分题是比较难的,这跟完形填空一样,这个也是10分,语法知识不好这个题目也可以放在最后做。 再有单词拼写,20个,大部分同学做得不好就是平常的基本功不够,大家拼写20个题里肯定有容易拼的,像比较短的尽量做,比较长的放弃就放弃算了,所以时间分配大家应该多考虑,把考试的两个卷1卷、2卷都有什么内容心中要有数。考前多做模拟试题,感觉一下,设定时间2个半小时,这样时间分配心理就有数了。 考过英语(一)的考生如何备战英语(二) 英语二最后通过比英语一要难,有同学说通过英语一很容易,为什么英语二考了很多次通不过,这因为作为英语学习还没有达到一定的水平,英语一是专科水平,水平比英语二低,考的容易。想考好英语二,不下工夫不花一定的时间做努力,精讲课程要听,考前要做一个努力的复习,如果没有这个阶段想要走捷径我告诉大家学英语二是没有捷径可走的,一定要经过勤学苦练,才能够把这门课程真正学到手,顺利通过考试。祝大家考试成功!
