爱德华·萨丕尔（1884—1939），美国人类学家、语言学家，在语言学史上占有重要地位。《语言论》对语言重新进行定义，指出现有的语言形式分类不完善，并对语言形式从概念和关系两个角度进行重新划分。本书共十一章，讨论了语言学的对象、语言成分、语音、语法程序、语法概念、语言结构的类型、语言的发展、语音规律、语言的交互影响、语言与种族和文化的关系、语言和文学的关系等问题。
作者简介：
萨丕尔，美国人类学家，语言学家。美国艺术和科学院院士。1907年起先后在加州大学、宾州大学从事研究与教学。1909年获哥伦比亚大学博士学位。1910～1925年任渥太华加拿大国立博物馆人类学部主任。1925年起任芝加哥大学人类学与语言学副教授、教授。1931年到耶鲁大学，任刚成立的人类学系主任。他担任过美国语言学会会长和美国人类学会会长。
