江心洲，是奔腾的长江多年冲刷成的陆地。洲上的居民当年也是为逃避战火或从四方八乡移居而来，或是流浪的船民定居下来，十家九姓。这些年来，由于交通的落后造成的与世隔绝，使得江心洲亦发的贫穷。洲上的人家青壮劳力悉数外出打工。长江冲程出来的土地，肥沃得冒油。老来无处去，挥锄种洲地。留下来的尽是老弱残病的老人带着没办法跟父母外出的孩童，艰难地耕种着土地。江心洲外滩多水港渔汊，是打渔的好场所。一些谙熟水性的渔民也依然不舍身边的长江。
江心洲上红蓼长得格外蓊蓊郁郁，并很有层次。洲堤是菠菜一样的红蓼，越往外滩，因其水多，沼泽地，红蓼越发长得茂盛，高大，犹如小树。花开时季，江边成片的红蓼抽出红艳艳的花柱，把江天染红，把长江打扮得色彩斑烂。渔汛季节，江上的小渔船，常常钻进江边的红蓼丛中歇息着，吸着沼泽地里的清水，埋锅造饭，瞅着出江打渔的时机。红蓼丛，俨然成了他们的家。

雨季过去了，最考验人的意志，却还是与水相持。在洲上工作的人们最渡过的就是这段日子。每日在大堤上走着，注视着水情雨情，看到的似乎纹丝不动的江流。日头在头顶上晒着，江面上，庄稼上，草丛上都发出吱吱的响声。人，都到了恐惧的极限。
而大水中从容的是白杨树，它们在洪流中提挺拔着身躯的;从容的还有洲上那些对大水司空见惯的老人们。老人说，等吧等吧，红蓼花红了，红蜻蜓飞来了，这大水就得退了。
于是，我就天天盼望着红蓼花开。洲堤上的本来长不大的红蓼因为得到水的滋润郁郁葱葱起来，看叶子中间抽出了一穗数穗白色的花柱，再看江中的洪流似乎也不在发鼓了。
